THE REVEAL Living Room Makeover- One Room Challenge Week 8
Well folks, here it is- THE REVEAL!!!!
I had so much fun working with my husband on this space. This is the first room makeover in our new home. If you’re new here, we just moved in this past June. For the past two years, I haven’t had the opportunity to design a space for our family and I have to admit this room truly is everything I had hoped for, and I'm not even exaggerating.
Like any good reveal, let's start with the before. Like the BEFORE the before. These are the listing photos.
And for those of you just tuning in, here’s the design plan we used to work from as we tackled the demo of that wall on the left in the above photo.
The changes we made:
Remove that awkward bump out.
Expose the original brick chimney
Add vertical shiplap to that wall.
Install new flooring.
Install new ceiling fan.
Paint the entire room in PPG Gray Palomino.
Install Pacific Summit Classic Wood Stove.
Bleached our existing coffee table to lighten the wood tone.
Ordered new slipcover for our Farlov sofa.
Install curtains using my curtain hack.
Ordered a new rug.
Ordered pillows from Tonic Living.
Purchased a new TV.
Ordered new Roman Blinds.
Without further adieu, here's how it all came together.
Styling 101
I like to use a mix of old and new, paying attention to textures, layers and color palette. The rope tray has a lovely birch insert.
Add height
I love to use books to add height to my vignettes. In my case, they are decor books (yes, I read all my books) but, you could use books of your own personal interests.
Thrifted
I like to scour second hand decor shops and antique barns for my accessories. Lamp, artwork and glass jug all purchased second hand.
Statement Piece
Every space needs a focal point or that one statement piece. It becomes the compass for the rest of the design. This wood burning appliance was the first thing we decided on for this space and the rest of the design was created to support and complement this statement piece.
FB Marketplace Find
I picked up this buffet and hutch spring of 2020 during the height of the COVID pandemic. I need a creative distraction and this piece fit the bill. Originally I thought it would be in my home office but it fills this awkward corner nicely since it is behind the french door that leads to our foyer. I added this peel and stick wallpaper this past summer and love the pop of color and pattern it adds to the space. Again, the accessories inside are mostly thrifted.
Pattern Play
I love the pop of color and whimsical pattern of this wallpaper. It really brightens up this corner and adds visual interest to the white painted buffet and hutch. Antique bells and some cloth covered books for texture and height.
If I had to describe my living room, I would say it’s cozy, comfortable and family friendly.
I realize I signed up for the One Room Challenge and that this event is all about style, defining your style, etc. My approach may not be of popular opinion but, I feel too often we get caught up with labelling our spaces by a specific design style and I feel we owe our spaces so much more than that.
For me, home isn’t just about what it looks like. It’s so much more than a certain style or label and following the latest trends. It’s about how our spaces make us feel, what it smells like, sounds like and what memories come to mind when we think about home?
It’s so easy to put ourselves in a style box especially if you’re chasing trends and taking style quizzes. To be honest, I’m not interested in defining a particular style but rather surrounding myself with things that I simply love and to be comfortable in our home.
It’s about finding that harmony between the furniture- new and old, the accessories and collections while honouring the style of our home.
Put your feet up
It’s important to me that I create spaces for our home that is cozy, comfortable and that stands up to the busyness of our everyday life. This space is enjoyed by the whole family including our five fur babies. Pictured here is our 12 year pug, Hurley.
I want to take a moment to say that we paid out of pocket for this entire makeover. I do want to thank McEvoy Custom Blinds for working with me on this project as I love my roman blinds. The lovely photos that you see here are courtesy of Jan Wan Photography.
And a big thank you to you, my followers on social, those of you who visit and read this blog and for those who subscribe to my email list, you are the ones that keep this business of mine going. I appreciate every like, comment and share.
Bless,
Marsha
