It’s time to stop walking around moving boxes and it’s time to get some proper storage for our clothes. Two broken dressers and a teeny tiny closet just isn’t cutting it. If I’m being honest, we haven’t had proper clothes storage for the past 4 years. We sold our home in 2017 and in that time we spent time living on my in laws acreage out west where the closet in the principal bedroom also housed the water system for the home. We had a massive blow up of the water softener that sprayed water all over our clothes. It wasn’t pretty. Then we lived in a rental for two years upon our return to Nova Scotia and the closet was all of 24” wide. Needless to say, we are over it and heck, we deserve it!

For this bedroom makeover, it goes without saying, that most of our budget and attention will be on storage.

Our bedroom isn’t large at 11’6” deep and 14’2” wide and throw in the fact that our home is 1.5 storey means we also have sloped ceilings to work around. Immediately, I knew we would be exploring the PAX system from Ikea to best capitalize on what square footage we had to work with. I like the flexibility of this system, the many styles and customizable options plus the price point was within our budget. Ikea has an online planner for their pax system that allows you to play around with different combinations even what components you want on the inside. I created a rudimentary plan and then booked an in-store consult with a PAX specialist.

Before our appointment, we double checked our measurements and I also sat down with my husband to discuss our storage needs. Since he would be having his own closet, I also wanted to give him the opportunity to share with me how he preferred to organize and store his clothes. He had ONE request. No more baskets!! So we took inventory of what we have, organized it by function- pants, shirts, lounge wear, sleepwear, etc. He much prefers to hang his clothes where I like a combination of hanging and shelves and we both love the soft close pull out drawers with the PAX system.

Our intention is to build them in and finish them off with crown moulding and baseboard so they look built in. I’m also on the hunt for some pretty hardware for the doors.

After the consult, we were able to purchase most of the items. A few key pieces being out of stock. I fully expected that in light of the current situation and I’ve set notifications for the rest of the items. Fingers crossed some of them come in this weekend/early next week so we can get started on this room ASAP.

As for the rest of the room, I ordered some paint samples from Farrow and Ball for the walls, trim and floors. I’m committing to giving our existing upholstered bed a makeover and need to order some fabric. I’m also scouring FB marketplace for some pine dressers to use as bedside tables. A new rug, some wall sconces for bedside lighting, some art and proper window treatments are also on the list.

I’m putting together a mood board, style board and floor plan to hopefully share with you guys tomorrow.

The ultimate goal of this makeover is to address the lack of storage in the room but also to create a cozy, relaxing retreat that feels like us.
