Our Bedroom Makeover + A Mood Board
I mentioned on Tuesday (when I shared our closet plans) that we would be giving our bedroom a makeover. We picked up most of the components for the closet yesterday and I’m hoping some other pieces come back in stock this weekend because then we can start the build of our built in closet system.
I ordered paint samples from Farrow and Ball yesterday morning and I’m going with a moody color palette for this room. I really want it to feel cozy. Our room faces west so we only get mid to late afternoon sun this time of year and well with the shorter days, I’m really craving a space to retreat to that hugs me at the end of the day.
From left to right: Farrow and Ball Mizzle (wallls), Pigeon (floor) and Wimborne (doors and trim)
Mizzle (left) is a modest grey green. The addition of green pigment diminishes any cool blue tones, creating a lighter shade of Pigeon (middle). Rooms feel soft and contented when painted in this rather indeterminate colour. I chose the darker shade of Pigeon for our floors and the just-off white of Wimborne. Wimborne is only a shade away from a pure white, the addition of the smallest amount of warm yellow pigment creates a very versatile shade which is just a little softer than Farrow and Ball’s All White. I definitely want the overall feeling in the space to feel warm. I’m excited to receive the samples to see what they look like in the space. This color palette is definitely a departure from my usual go-to light and airy palette.
I’m in love with the look of the slipcovered beds and want to try my hand at DIY’ing our current upholstered bed to achieve this look. I love the Broderick Slipcovered Bed by Serena and Lily but at $4098 USD, that is way outside of our budget. I sourced this linen bedskirt from Pottery Barn and I’ve ordered this fabric sample from Tonic Living to reupholster the headboard. I’m going to try my hand at the french seam look for the headboard as indicated in the bottom right photo.

I like the relaxed classic look of the slipcovered bed and think our existing bed frame and headboard will look fabulous with this DIY makeover. I love how the natural linen plays off the grey green color palette of the walls and foors.
I’m on the hunt for some antique pine dressers for bedside tables.
I’m thinking something along the lines of this:
I like to pull a style board together to see how the colors, fabrics, wood tones and textures I’m wanting to incorporate will work together. This is different from a mood board that I shared at the beginning of this post. I love the warmth and patina of old pine and I really want us to have storage in our bedside tables (to cut down on the clutter on my husband’s side of the bed). I also love to incorporate antique pieces for their character.
I love the relaxed look and texture of linen bedding and I recently purchase a white quilt from Home Sense and I’m thinking something alone these lines for the duvet. I love the tone on tone and the classic look of a pinstripe.
The bottom left image is actually FB Mizzle on the walls with Pigeon on the floors and Wimborne White on the baseboards and radiator. We currently have laminate flooring in our bedroom. It isn’t the nice stuff and it looks rather cheap. In our hallway and son’s bedroom, there is the original pine floors so I’m hoping we have them under the laminate. If we don’t I’m going to paint the laminate flooring. I hope though we will find the original pine floors under the laminate. I’m fully prepared they may be in bad shape and I would be totally ok with painting them. I love a painted floor especially in a low traffic area like a bedroom and I fully intend on having an 8x10 rug in the space. I’m thinking this one as it pulls the warm tones from the pine dressers I’m wanting to incorporate as well as the cooler blue tones which will complement the grey green walls and floors.
I’ve ordered the fabric sample, paint samples and I may order the bedskirt today so that is done. I’ll continue to scour FB marketplace for pine dressers and I’m going to go with a simple linen roman blind for our window.
Let’s talk floor plan.
Never underestimate the power of a good floor plan to keep your design goals on track. In our case it helped us figure out the PAX closet system we were adding to the space. It also help to determine the best size rug and for us that’s an 8x10. You want all main furniture like the bed and bedside tables to be sitting on the rug. As I mentioned I’m on the hunt for bedside tables and doing a floor plan lets me know what size will work best. I know I shouldn’t go wider than 25” inches. Yes I have the room to do as big as 30” inches but then they won’t be sitting on the rug and I really want the rug to anchor that side of the room.
The existing closet in the space is going to be converted into a linen closet. This house doesn’t have one (old house problems). The nook to the left of the closet is where I have stacked my two antique blanket boxes. They are in their original paint and I want them to stay in the room. One will become our family keepsake box while the other will store my collection of wool blankets and antique quilts.
We don’t have a time line to knock this makeover out. It all depends on when the rest of the closet components come back in stock as that is the first order of business. I will tackle the more decorative stuff over the next couple of months. I’m excited to create a restful cozy retreat for both us and it feels good to get this ball rolling.
