Living Room Makeover-One Room Challenge Week 3

This week we saw ALOT of progress in our living room. So much progress in fact that we can now use the space! I won’t lie, I was more than happy to have the messy part of this makeover behind us. I realize that my tolerance for reno dust has diminished significantly the older I get! LOL.

If you missed week 1 and week 2, be sure to go back and check it out as I share our plans for the space and you will learn how we overcame a major hiccup during demo.

Once the vertical shiplap was installed, it was my turn to get in there and do some filling, caulking and painting.

I painted all the vertical shiplap before my husband installed the flooring. Typically, I paint my trim first but after spending a wild Friday night, filling holes and caulking, I decided to just go for it and painted one coat on the shiplap.

Here’s a photo of the shiplap installed before any filling and caulking.

It’s amazing how filling and caulking can hide imperfections. In the photo below, you can also see the floor has been installed. We had to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time because our wood stove install was scheduled for October 8.

It’s no accident that our pug matches the floor. If you have a pug you know they can shed. I don’t have time to vacuum everyday so I need a floor that can be forgiving because with a dog, three cats and a house bunny, there is no shortage of fur on our floors. I also like that these look like pine with very little grain and some knots. We have original pine floors in some other spaces in our home so I felt this was a good complement.

And the designer in me could not resist placing some furniture in place once Kenton had the floor installed on this half of the room. I can’t wait to say good-bye to this slipcover!

With the painting and trim 90% complete and the flooring installed, we were ready for the wood stove!

I’ll talk more about the wood stove next week, week 4, as I feel this beauty deserves its very own post. Also for those of you not familiar with using a wood stove, I will talk about why we decided to do this, the style of stove, the costs and all about the install.

Still to do:

  • Install baseboard and shoe mould behind wood stove. Ideally we would’ve liked to have that part completed but we ran out of time and since it did not impede the install in anyway, we were ok with it. Plus our home is over a 100 years old and this room in particular has the original baseboard so we will be getting creative to replicate the existing profile using today’s products.

  • I hope to get to scraping the paint of the glass on the french doors this week. We have three of them in this space. Ugh!! I will listen to a podcast while I do this. I use a razor blade or exacto knife. I much prefer this method rather than taping everything off as I always end up with paint bleed anyways.

  • The rug arrived but I’m waiting on the rug pad.

  • The custom slipcover should arrive this week.

  • I want to see if I can lighten the wood tone on our existing coffee table that we built from an old beam. The table weighs a ton.

  • Install new ceiling fan.

  • Source pillows for the sofa along with a few accessories.
