How to un-Decorate your Home after Christmas
As we move away from the Christmas season and into the New Year, many of you may be wondering how to decorate your spaces after all the Christmas decor has been packed away. If your a home decor enthusiast, the last few months are very decor oriented- I mean since September, we’ve decorated for fall, Thanksgiving, Halloween and then Christmas. But, you may left asking, “What do we do with our spaces after all those festive seasons?”
After all the festive decor, it’s time to bring it back to a more simple clean look to kick off the new year with a fresh start. This post will be all about how to decorate your home after Christmas before we decorate for Spring. I know many of you will begin removing your Christmas decor before the New Year while others will hold off until after ringing in the New Year. Either way, I wanted to share some of my tips with you for un-decorating your spaces.
Room-by-Room
I always try to go room by room instead of taking on the whole house all at once, it is nice to feel a sense of accomplishment when you can tick off one room at a time. This time of year can be feel overwhelming so I typically will start with the room that has the most Christmas decor in it!
2. Remove all Christmas Decor
In each room, I will remove all of my Christmas decor and sort it into piles. This is a great time to take stock of what you have, what you like and what you don’t. I take this time to reorganize my Christmas storage bins and totes will donate anything that I no longer like. Most of my decor is things I’ve collected, made, etc over the past 20 years and so I don’t tend to have too much that I need to donate at this point.
3. Re-evaluate the space
This is a great time to re-evaluate how you use the space- to rearrange, purge, shop your home and bring in pieces from another space, etc. I love using this time to re-evaluate the purpose of each room in our home. Is it working for our family? How could we better use this space? Would I like the room layout to be different? Are there other items that I don’t want in the space? These are all great questions to ask yourself to discover if you need to make any other changes in each room!
4. Do a deep clean
It is so incredibly satisfying to clean each room as we move past Christmas and into the winter months. Wash your slipcovers, clean under furniture, dust the shelves, give the floors a good scrub or vacuum, and anything else you need to do to bring some freshness back into the room. I always make sure I’ve cleaned before I try to add any winter decor into the space!
5. Slowly bring in the decor
The new year is a great time to start off your home on a fresh start, take some time to really think about how to make your home function better for you this year!
Consider the function of your room, add in the furniture and pieces you love, then bring back in the decor items you love! If you don’t love something it might be the time to consider if it needs a revamp or needs a new home.
6. Add in some greenery
Plants aren’t just for spring and summer. I love to mix in some winter greens along with my everyday plants. Paper whites and Amaryllis are great additions this time of year. I will keep some of my Christmas greens like smaller trees and wreaths out during the winter months. Just remove any of the Christmas decor from them so they don’t look out of place.
7. My winter decor staples
When I think of winter decor I’m going for fresh, cozy, and warm. After all of the joy that Christmas decor brings I want my space to feel just as happy but a little less cluttered. My go-to items for winter are fresh winter greens, candles, diffusers, wool blankets & antique quilts, textured pillows, earth-tone items, & antique art and mirrors. It’s so easy to add in some “winter” art to your decor. Check out Etsy where you can download prints to your computer, have them printed and use your existing frames or pick some up at second hand stores, antique shops, etc.
I hope you enjoyed these ideas will help you transition your home from Christmas to winter decor!
