Getting real about your renovation budget

Renovating? Maybe doing a room refresh?

Don't avoid this MAJOR conversation.

I often hear crickets when I talk about this with potential clients.

It's "BUDGET".

And I get it.

Renovating a home is a new experience for most, so many individuals don't know what to expect or how much things should cost.

OR

You're like budget, what budget? Oh...I need a budget?

I hear from clients all the time how they love to watch HGTV, but unfortunately they have done the home renovation industry a huge disservice in that many individuals now have unrealistic expectations of what a renovation actually costs and how long it takes. Most people go into a renovation project with their budgetary expectations too low and too short of a time window.

I totally get that talking about budgets...

Isn't fun.

Isn't sexy.

And there are probably WAY more exciting things you'd rather be doing like picking out accessories, furniture, or watching House of the Dragon or The Handmaid's Tale (both are soooo good;)

The first step many will take is talking to a general contractor (GC) while in the initial planning phase. Unfortunately this isn't always the best solution either as most GC's will not take any design elements into consideration. One of the most heartbreaking scenarios we see all too often is when a GC gives someone a number for their renovation, based on "past projects", and by the time the client has selected all of their finishes and fixtures the cost estimate has now doubled.

Working with MSID we have our preferred contractor partners. These are contractors I have worked with for over ten years. Clients will often ask, “are they expensive?” My response is always, you need a contractor who can execute the design plan flawlessly. It’s not just about how fast they can demo but also about the minutest of details in the finishing work. It’s the attention detail that pulls a design together.

Getting back to budget...

You'd be making a big mistake if you avoid talking about your project budget.

You see...your budget is the guide for your project.

It dictates everything, including how much you spend on every item. And if you're hiring a designer or contractor to help you with the work, you DEFINITELY need to talk about it because you need to be on the same page throughout your project.

And if you're thinking "I have no idea how to come up with a room budget" then you're in luck, because this reference guide is for you.

This reference guide is for you if you’re...

At MSID, when we are designing for a client, we focus on three levels of finishes: good, better, and best. We do not use cheap or bargain products in our projects, so good, even though it's entry level, does not equate to cheap. We design and build spaces to last for our busy families.

We understand that it may be difficult to know what category you want your project to fall into, especially as we can mix-and-match from each by incorporating some higher end finishes with a few moderately-priced features to help with costs.

In our Budget Reference Guide, we focus on furniture and styling by laying out our good, better, best pricing for various rooms. Download your free copy today to learn more about the true costs of a room refresh.
