Eight simple ways to refresh your patio
When I planned to write this, our province wasn’t in a lockdown, but I feel the timing of this post is perfect since we are all being asked to stay at home. With the arrival of May, now is the time to freshen up our outdoor spaces and if it is anything like last summer (thanks COVID) we are going to be spending a lot of time here.
Upgrading your patio doesn't have to be costly or time-consuming. A few inexpensive projects and design tricks can turn a basic space into the ultimate outdoor retreat.
Container Gardening
Adds interesting colors and textures to your back yard and patio area. Large containers can be expensive so consider perusing pinterest for an easy DIY project.
Wooden or Organic Furniture
I like teak and rattans/wicker as it lends itself to many design styles from modern BOHO, Scandinavian, farmhouse, coastal style.
Backyard Fire pit
This is a must for our family. I really like the propane style if you live in areas where there are fire bans. However, nothing beats the sound and smell of a wood burning fire pit in my opinion. This is an easy DIY project that can be completed in a weekend and one that your family will enjoy for years to come.
Plant inexpensive Perennials
Perennials come back year after year, which means you'll save money on landscaping in the long run.
Consider spending a little extra on one special piece of furniture you'll use regularly. Finish your backyard with more affordable accents, such as pillows and outdoor rugs, to complete your space.
Think about how you are going to use the space when determining the kind of furniture you want to incorporate. If dining outside is not your thing, then don’t spend money on a dining set, rather purchase perhaps a conversational seating area. Outdoor furniture can be pricey and it takes a beating due to the elements. If purchasing new is not in your budget, consider DIY’ing some pieces. There are lots of plans for outdoor sofas and sectionals on Pinterest.
I love the idea of a hammock or a swing chair. These make the perfect spot to curl up with a good book and an afternoon nap.
Lighting
Don’t forget to light it up. Nothing beats an evening outside. I love to use landscape lighting and string lights to create a nice ambient patio/outdoor space.
