6 steps to creating a home in a rental
A common misconception for renters is they cannot turn a rental into a space that reflects their design style. Sure, this space that you now call home may be temporary but that doesn’t mean it can’t be comfortable, cozy and be a reflection of your individual style.
It is true as renters, you are confronted with a bunch of limitations- things you cannot change like permanent fixtures and add that it is a temporary residence and well you don’t want to spend a ton of money but, rather than view these as limitations, consider them as challenges instead.
Many rentals come with lacklustre paint colours, maybe carpet and limited natural lighting.
Here are my tips on how to turn that rental into your place:
1. Paint.
Don’t underestimate the power of paint. Some landlords will be ok if you ask them for permission to paint and you could go as far as to ask their approval on the paint colour by giving them a couple of options. It doesn’t have to be the entire place, maybe just a few key accent walls. If you are given permission to paint then I strongly suggest keeping things neutral. You can also add colour in the way of paint with your furniture.
2. Removable wallpaper.
This is a fantastic opportunity to add colour and pattern especially to a smaller space such as a bathroom or as a kitchen backsplash. Easy to install and easy to remove. There are plethora of options available online as well as your local home improvement and decor stores.
3. Add lighting.
Many rentals lack natural light, it is easy to add lighting in the way of table lamps, floor lamps, battery operated LED light strips for under cabinet light and then there is the magic light trick made popular by Brooke at Nesting with Grace. It pretty much allows you to install a wall sconce anywhere. I have also updated ceiling fixtures in our rental. Just reinstall the original when you move.
4. Cover ugly carpet or worn floors with rugs
Again this is another way for you to add your personal style to the space by adding in colour, pattern and texture. Yes, you can place a rug on top of carpet. Just consider the weight of the rug and be sure to use a rug pad to keep the rug in place.
5. Window treatments.
Curtain panels can be picked up inexpensively at many big box retailers. The Ritva from Ikea are inexpensive and a popular choice. If you don’t love the tab look, you can cut them off and use drapery rings to hang them like Young House Love.
6. Accessorize.
Decorative accessories, pillows, throw blankets, baskets, artwork etc. These touches can make any place feel like home and a great way to inject your personality into the space.
These are some inexpensive tips paired with your own furnishings and belongings that will go a long way to make that rental feel like a home, even temporarily.
